Fanningberg — Lungau's family ski mountain, 15 minutes from Mariapfarr. Wide sunny slopes, short lift lines, a good ski school, and fair prices.
Obertauern — One of Austria's most snow-sure resorts, with a 100 km connected circuit at 1,740 m. A big-mountain day trip 25 minutes from Mariapfarr.
Gnadenalm — High valley floor just over the Tauern pass beyond Obertauern — easy ski touring terrain, a cross-country skiing base, and a natural toboggan run below the Johanneswasserfall.
Tamsweg — Lungau's main town — shops, pools, cafés, the St. Leonhard pilgrimage church, and the Samson procession tradition. 12 minutes from Mariapfarr.

When it works

From early December, when Fanningberg opens, until it closes at Easter. Obertauern opens in late November, so a weekend before Fanningberg’s first day can ski Obertauern twice instead. Each mountain’s page lists this winter’s dates.

Swaps

Longer descents on day one: Grosseck-Speiereck is also 15 minutes from the apartment.
A family day with more altitude: Katschberg, on the pass between Salzburg and Carinthia, 25 minutes away.
A rest afternoon: the gentle ski tour and toboggan run at Gnadenalm, or its free loipe.
